A routine cleaning is usually performed every 6 months. However, sometimes life happens and we may not take care of our teeth like we should. If this is the case for you, don't panic! There is still much that can be done to treat your specific periodontal needs. If your periodontal disease has progressed to the point that the bone is affected, you have tartar that is on the root surface of your teeth and is hiding deep in the gum tissue around your teeth. Periodontal disease will continue to progress until you have the tartar professionally removed.
Many individuals are fearful or nervous about this procedure since their teeth can be quite sensitive. At Dr. Hevrins office, we strive to make this procedure as comfortable as possible by offering nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and anesthetic. Dr. Hevrins staff are very experienced at performing this procedure. Scaling and root planing is done in one visit usually lasting 90 minutes and is helpful for subsequent healing and compliance. During this visit, all the tartar is removed from the root surfaces and your teeth. The gum tissue is also curettaged to encourage healing and tightening to the teeth.
After one month of healing, you will return to the office for a fine scale and polish. This is so we may re-evaluate your gum health and make sure the treatment and your home care is successful. At this time, we will determine what interval of cleaning appointment is necessary. Most patients will return every 3 to 4 months to keep their periodontal disease in remission.
